After a long battle with cancer, Puan Shareeza Abdullah passed on at the General Hospital yesterday ( Nov 9, 2008 at 8.30pm). Michaelians remember her as a hardworking and deeply committed teacher who had never failed to effortlessly guide and coach students in their English lessons.
She was also the instrumental force to lead St Michael's into producing great and award-winning debaters, having beaten schools like ACS, Anderson, Main Convent, MGS, Tarcisian Convent and many other schools nationwide.
During her tenure as teacher in SMI, Puan Shareeza had produced many outstanding students.
St Michael's extends deepest condolence to her family. Rest In Peace.

I was one of those who attended the funeral. As an old boy, I felt sad that a great Michaelian teacher has departed, yet happy and grateful that her suffering has ended. For those who do not know, the late Pn. Shareezah Abdullah had been fighting a tough battle against cancer.

Till October this year, she and I had been communicating often via e-mail and telephone conversations. Ever since I had entered university, telephone conversations became more difficult and rare, and updates through e-mail were easier.

I was told that initially about four years ago that her health had deteriorated due to Hepatitis. Never had we anticipated that it would soon become cancerous.

Even though her health was deteriorating, she had been travelling frequently with her loving husband, and though retired, she initially took up part-time teaching in an English Language Centre. Her passion for teaching never died.

I remember her as a great debate teacher. Under her guidance, my passion for debating grew, although I was never a better debater than Andrew Wong, Timothy Wong and the others anyway.

She was also the teacher whom I used to turn to quite often to proof-read certain important documents and speeches, and she would do so willingly.

Many students may not be fond of her for some reasons, but over the years even after her retirement, I kept admiring this teacher who had served the school for such a long time. Both of us could discuss issues and share experiences as if we were close friends. Whenever possible, we would even meet up and have a good chat.

In all, she may be small and little, but she was friendly, gentle and warm. I often recall her familiar words every time we end our telephone conversation or every time she replies my e-mail: "Thanks for maintaining contact with me, Guo Zheng, and God bless you."

And now, thanks for all that you had done, Pn. Shareezah, and God bless you, too.

Rest in peace, great Michaelian teacher!

Oh my god, I just got the news. I can't believe that she's gone, and that I was unfortunate enough not to know of her illness and not to be there. As one of the many students who got into medical school because of her, I feel a bit guilty that I could do nothing to repay her. I envy you, George, for being there with her in her final moments - I would fly back if I could. My deepest condolences to the family. Thanks for doing such a good job of updating us Mr Khiew; I'll be back home in December and hope to see you then.

Mr. Khiew,
Just here to inform you that I have written a post in my blog on Pn. Shareezah. I've also included the last two e-mails that she sent to me prior to her demise.

Connection to Facebook from UTP is very poor. Please include condolences to Mr. Abdul Majid on my behalf. Thanks.
