OGA Annual Dinner In Taiping

It was a family gathering of sorts at the 46th Annual Reunion Dinner of the Old Georgians’ Association Taiping where some 500 former students of SMK St George turned up to meet their former teachers and classmates.

It was also an opportunity to meet up long lost friends and to rekindle friendship. Thanking the former students for the “homecoming”, its president Paul Loh Eng Wah said their efforts in attending the dinner was reflective of their support and commitment towards the cause of the alma mater and Old Georgians alike.

Among those present at the dinner were representatives of all Lasallian schools in Malaysia, former students, Dato’ Ng Tieh Chuan, the CEO of the MPH Group of companies in Malaysia and His Excellency Yean Yoke Heng, Ambassador of Malaysia to the Republic of Cuba. Pictures 1 & 3: Guests singing the School Rally

St Michael's was represented by Mr Adrian Tsen, Brother Matthew, Mr Harneak. Mr Bobby Chew and Mr Peter Khiew.

We had a nice time there and could not forget the curry prawn that came with the bread. We dipped the bread in the curry, tasted it and "wow".

REMINISCENCES OF PAST GAIETY

This picture was taken five years ago. Prefectorial Board of Form Two prefects. They have grown up and now studying locally and in many parts of the world. Feel free to say hello to your teachers who are still here in St Michael's and perhaps drop a line to say what you are doing now. Words can inspire one another.

A Liverpool In The Making?

Congratulations to the Under-15 Michaelian footballers for achieving some winning streaks lately. These players were able to beat ACS 2-1, went on to thrash SMK Permaisuri Bainun 2-0 and travelled to SMK Aminuddin Baki Chemor a few days later and netted two goals to a zero. Well, these are the young Michaelians who are trained by our own teachers like En.Zulkarnain Daud, En Omar and En Mohd Faizal (a trainee teacher from UPSI). Well done, boys!

Let's look at some of the comments from our old boys.

Dear Peter,

I am delighted to read of our football team's achievement. Please convey to them my best wishes.

It will be good if the school can organise for interested Michaelians to be there at future games to provide moral support.

I'm sure the PIBG will approve payment for transportation n refreshments.

Rgds,

Joseph Michael Lee

Mohd Dzran on behalf of SMIOB says,

Congratulations to the football team..

Yes, a Liverpool in the making..

I hope that SMI will excel in every sports as through sports it will develop the character and discipline among the students..

Yes..I agree with the presence of supporters...make the players and the supporters unite as one...it will be great if the old boys can join and support the team...

I suggest that we set up a cheer team...this team will cheer and sing a motivational song such as "when the saint goes marching in","barisan kita" and others..it will inspire the players on the pitch...

And I suggest before the start of a match..the players must sing the School Rally...together with the supporters...

If the game falls on a Saturday..the working old boys, if being informed, can come and support the team...

Note from the Editor: Mr Joseph Michael is an old boy and current Chairman of PIBG while En Dzran is an old boy of SMI who practises law in KL. Thank you guys for the feedback. I have relayed the news to our coaches and they jumped with joy and excitement.

Look What We Have Replaced?

The bulky, worn-out and rusty gate at the main entrance has been replaced. It was there for some decades and the school had actually contemplated to have it replaced years ago but plans were put on hold for many reasons.
Just two months ago, the Board of Governors approved and set aside some money to get the gate done up and Brother Matthew was assigned to work on its design and cost. The frontage too, which comes complete with the school logo, has also been completed. There you are fellow Michaelians. When you pass by the school or have a walk at the Ipoh Padang, you will be proud to see a bronze-coloured gate stands proudly alongside the school frontage. Both of these suitably complement our grand-looking building of St Michael's. That's cool.
Oh yes, this effort is another step towards St Michael's Centennial Celebrations in 2012. Thank you Dato' Seri Lee Oi Hian, Mr Adrian Tsen and Mr Phoon for adding another feather in the Michaelian cap.

Michaelians Say Yes to Earth Hour

All the participants, present Michaelians and past students, met at the La Salle Centre early in the morning. The outing at Taman D.R. Seenivasagam was organised by Jia Xin, Rachel and Aaron Oo. The Michaelian volunteers picked up litter and informed and invited people there to participate in Earth Hour that night. Bravo!

St Michael's 82nd. Sports Day

What a day it was, filled with grandeur and mood of festivities. Members of the Michaelian Military Band and all the classes marched proudly with their antics and styles, amusing the many parents and guests who turned up to watch the annual event. Themed, "Upholding the Great Michaelian Ethos", the guest of honour was an old boy and ex-Olympian Mr Asir Victor.

Form Two Prefects Installed

There were two things for the prefects which made the occasion special.

First, it was their investiture day. It was carried out infront of their teachers and friends at the basketball court, overlooking the majestic school building. After receiving their badges, the thirty nine prefects pledged their oath of office with renewed spirit and vigour.
"We, who have been chosen to become Prefects of St Michael's Institution IPOH, undertake to perform our duties with responsibility, fairness and loyalty.
We will reflect at all times, by leadership and example, the values and standards of the school. We will enforce school rules and codes of behaviour in all students. We will endeavour to show compassion and leadership to students to meet the School's values and expectations. We will encourage students to respect and understand the history and traditions of the School".

Second, the event stood out historically as the installation was carried out by an old boy of St Michael's, who is also the Head Boy and Michaelian of The Year in 1969. We are indeed honoured to have the presence of Mr Adrian Tsen, a greatly-respected figure in the corporate world, to be our guest of honour to give out the badges to the young leaders. They were certainly inspired and encouraged by the achievements and accolades of the current president of the Old Michaelians Association.
We will continue to identify and welcome home prominent Michaelians to the alma mater to share their rich and invaluable experiences with us. And thank you for the three ever loyal and faithful Michaelians who also came that day - Mr Yong Sin Wah, Mr Harneak Singh and Mr Anthony Lourdes.
Principal Mr Phoon Chong Chee expressed his appreciation to Mr Adrian Tsen for gracing the occasion and made the event a memorable and meaningful one for the prefects.
