St Michael's 83rd Sports Day - Upbeat & Colourful

It was an occasion similar to the ones we had in the 60s, 70s, up to the 90s. Without doubt, St Michael's Sports Day was an event looked forward eagerly to by Michaelians.

Mr Koo Kim Kuang, guest-of-honour and principal Mr Phoon.

Two weeks before the sports day, practices after practices were held to improve their marching styles. Fierce competition could be seen among the upper forms, judging from the determination of each member of the class in outdoing one another by coming up with the best flag design, better marching formation and T-shirt designs. (It was only in the late 90s that T-shirts began to adorn the attire of pupils during the customary class marching, which was introduced by Brother Vincent Corkery when he was the director).

In Our Story (1994), "Competition in class marching was introduced, each class marching behind its cherished flag, and this became a colourful climax on the annual sports day".
Dozens of parents turned up to render strong support. Former principals who attended were Mr K. Balasubramaniam and Mr Teh Chor Aun. Among the former teachers who came were Tn Hj Meor Idris, En Harun bin Md Yusuf, Mr Lee Kem Siang, Mr Stephen Lee and Mr Charlie Wong. Representatives from the OMA who came were Mr Anthony Lourdes, Mr Bobby Chew, Mr R. Gnanasagaran and Mr Harneak Singh.
All in all, it was a day filled with pleasantry and great memory.
Come 2010- Michaelian Sports Day will be our 85th.

Signing off,
Peter Khiew

I love the T-shirt bearing the words: "You don't scare me. I'm a Michaelian". Very creative of them. Haha...
