Darren Leong, congratulations for being the State Champion. We are proud of you!

Winners of each category posing with their prizes. Darren is fifth from right
This year’s Spell it Right competition had a new format. A written preliminary spelling test was introduced this year.
The written component consisted of 30 words — 10 each in the easy, medium and difficult categories.
Only the top 100 contestants get to advance to each state challenge to vie for the best speller title at the National Finals in Kuala Lumpur on 19th Oct 2013.
Over 500 participants registered for the secondary level written test in Perak, a record high in the history of SIR Challenge.
Three (3) St. Michael’s Institution students took part in this year’s Spell it Right competition, they were;
Derek Leong 4 Sc 5
Darren Leong 2 A 9
Tharun 2 A 6
How jubilant they are! Our heartiest congratulations to all of them
All 3 students qualified from the written test held on 30th June 2013 at Kolej Masterskill, Jalan Kuala Kangsar, Ipoh as one of the top 100 spellers. On 6th October 2013, the Perak leg of the Spell-it-Right was held at the Taiping Sentral Mall.
The 100 students were divided into 10 Batches of 10 students each.
The students of each batch are seated on stage and each of them is given a word to spell and for those who spell their word correctly, they remain on stage.
For those who misspell their word, sadly, their journey in this year’s competition ends.
For the remaining students, they go through another round of words with the level of difficulty in each round increasing until only one student remained. The winners of each batch goes through to the Finals ( total of 10 Finalists ).
Our boys performance in the Preliminary Round were as follows;
Derek Leong was eliminated after spelling “credentials “ correctly but misspelt “androgynous”
Tharun was eliminated after spelling “ antagonist“ correctly but misspelt “teetotaller”
Darren Leong spelt “extinguish” and “eschew” correctly but tripped up on “scripophily”. He managed to recover to spell “carafe” correctly to qualify for the Finals.
In the Finals, the 10 Finalists were each given 3 words to spell.
Darren Leong was the only one to spell all his 3 words correctly. His words were “idoneous”, “infomediary” and “instauration”
Darren Leong will now represent Perak at the Spell it Right National Finals at Auditorium Kompleks Kementerian Dalam Negeri (KDM) Wilayah Persekutuan in Kuala Lumpur (on 19th October 2013).

Report sent in by Mr Andrew Leong, the father of Darren.
