St Michael's Ipoh bade farewell to Mdm Chan Nyook Ying on January 25, 2017 after becoming its principal for almost 2 years.
She arrived at the alma mater on March 2, 2015, taking over the helm from Mdm Loh Wei Seng, St Michael's first lady principal. Prior to the post here, Mdm Chan was the principal at SMK Menglembu.
Head prefect B. Yogavelan said that being the Principal of our alma mater is different from any other institutions as it takes a great deal of courage, wit and strength.
"That did not deter Madam Chan from demonstrating the Lasallian virtues of a true educator. Thank you Madam for all that you have gifted SMI with. You have truly been an inspiration to the thousands who wore the green and white with pride under your excellence leadership," he said.

Speaking to a representative of the SMI Alumni Klang Valley, Ms Lai, she reckoned, "Being the Principal of a major secondary school is no mean feat, let alone as the Principal of St Michael’s Institution (SMI) Ipoh, which is an esteemed institution with a 104-year old La Sallian tradition and a long track record of academic excellence.
In this respect, Puan Chan Nyook Ying has not only risen to the challenge of the job as Principal of St Michael’s Institution but she has performed remarkably well.
"In the short term of 2 years that I have come to know Puan Chan Nyook Ying, I have found her to be personable and professional in the discharge of her duties as Principal. I was rightly impressed by her enthusiasm, support and participation in the various annual activities organised by SMI Klang Valley Alumni Association", said Ms Lai.
